I’d like to believe that even the worst life events would always change us for the better. Alas, I don’t think profound experiences often tend to be as exciting and fun as discovering nudism. Rather, a profound experience is any kind of event that can change layer upon layer of who we are as a human being. It doesn’t have to be classified as good or bad (as it can be either of those). It gave me a desire and thirst to experience other things in life that scared me.Īnd I think that right there is what sums up a profound experience. It made me view friendship and camaraderie differently. It made me view the concept of vulnerability differently. And to describe the experience requires so many details (and lots of jokes, of course) that a Q&A, or even a blog post, could not do it justice.īut I will say this: that night changed my life forever on so many levels. I wrote a whole chapter about it in my book because. well. it was not only wildly eye-opening, but also pretty fucking hilarious. I would say the most profound emotional experience I ever had prior to my HIV diagnosis was the time my friend tricked me into going to a nudist BBQ. Which now begs a different question: what even qualifies as a profound experience? And what happens after you have one? Profound emotional experiences don't just come from the bad things in life, they can come from the good things as well. And then I realized that was totally stupid.

to answer this question, my brain started flipping through its emotional index of the terrible things I had ever been through.
